Dr. Raymond L. Hintz Obituary (1939

Dr. Raymond L. Hintz, 75, died quietly at his home in Stanford, California on Friday, September 12, 2014 following nine years of coping with the effects of a stroke. Dr. Hintz was born to Raymond A. and Laura Stevenson Hintz on August 22, 1939 in Fremont, Ohio he was raised in Clyde, Ohio and graduated from Clyde High School with the class of 1957. He attended California Institute of Technology, graduated Summa Cum Laude for The Ohio State University and received his M.D. from Western Reserve University in 1964. Dr. Hintz completed his pediatric internship at the University Hospital, Madison, Wisconsin and did his residency and chief residency at the Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. The following two years were spent at Malcolm S. Grow Hospital at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. Following an honorable discharge, he joined Judson J. Van Wyk's group in Chapel Hill, North Carolina to complete a fellowship in pediatric endocrinology. The next three years were spent in developing a pediatric endocrine department at the brand new University of Connecticut Hospital in Farmington, Connecticut. Dr. Hintz always said he would eventually go back to California and true to his word in 1975, he accepted a position as chief of the division of pediatric endocrinology at Stanford University in Stanford, California. He remained there for the next 30 years. Dr. Hintz successfully built an acclaimed laboratory focused on research involving growth hormone and growth factors. His work produced world wide collaboration through his time spent in Sweden, Germany, England, and Japan. Beyond these successes, his first love was his work with his patients, students and fellows. He happily spent several quarters at Stanford's overseas campuses teaching undergraduates in Berlin and Oxford. of all his professional ties, two organizations took first place: Lawson Wilkins Pediatric Endocrine Society (LWPES) where he served as President and Secretary (now PES) and the European Society of Pediatric Endocrinology (ESPE). Dr. Hintz published more than 350 scientific publications. Dr. Hintz is survived by his wife of 53 years, Carol Fowler Hintz, another Clyde High School gradate of the Class of 1957. He is also survived by his adored children, Lorac (Johnnie Lawton), Dr. Susan Hintz (Henry Rosack), Jennifer (Christopher Roberts) and Greg (Lindsay) Hintz. The joy of his life included his six grandchildren: Grace and Chloe Lawton; Karsten, Katja, Marika and Gisela Roberts. Also surviving are his sister, Mary Ann Grumbling and nephews Gary and Glen Grumbling and their families, his sister-in-law Lynda Wilbert and several cousins. Visitation will be from 9:00 am - Noon on Thursday, September 18 at the Mitchell-Auxter Funeral Home, 218 S. Main St., Clyde, Ohio. The funeral will be at noon at the funeral home with the Rev. Raymond Kovach officiating. Burial will follow at McPherson Cemetery with military rites provided by the Clyde American Legion and VFW. Memorials may be made to the Clyde Public Library, Clyde, Ohio.
