David Moyer

–

Clyde, Ohio

David Edward Moyer, affectionately known as Pete and Chief, 88 years old, from Clyde, Ohio, has finally stepped back from a life that was ceaselessly packed with adventure, generosity and the relentless pursuit of a good time. As his loving wife, Betty, I am honored to share a glimpse into the life of this dedicated, loving, and ambitious man who touched so many lives.

David was a man who did not know the meaning of the word 'idle.' He spent nearly four decades at Whirlpool, from where he retired in 1999, and served in the Ohio Army National Guard for almost 30 years, including a stint in Germany in 1979. He was also a devoted member of the Clyde Volunteer Fire Department for 37 years, serving as Chief from 1979-1999. He was dedicated to building community, particularly with local fire departments, and was as generous with his time as he was with his laughter. “Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth,” is a quote by Muhammad Ali that David lived by.

His passions were as fervent as his dedication to service. From hunting near the Arctic Circle and out west in Wyoming, to fishing in Florida and Quebec, David was always game for an adventure. He collected vintage cars, played softball with many different teams, coached little league baseball, and bowled for over 30 years. He was a member of the Clyde VFW, AMVETS, Clyde Moose, Clyde Eagles, and the Car Coddlers. His hobbies and club affiliations were as diverse as his life, but what mattered most to him was his family. As Winston Churchill once said, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” David made a beautiful life by giving generously to his family and his community.

David is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Moyer; his children, Dale (Genie) Moyer, Donna Owens, Dawn (Randal Gwinup) Wick, and Darin Moyer; and his sister, Patricia Zepernick; 17 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren- with one on the way, and one great great grandchild- with two on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Donna Moyer, and his great-grandson, Judah Moyer.

Visitation will be 5:00pm - 7:00pm, Friday, August 28, 2026, at Auxter-Recker Funeral Home, 218 South Main Street, Clyde, Ohio; Memorial Services with Fireman's Service will be conducted 11:00am, Saturday, August 29, 2026, at the funeral home. In honor of David, memorial contributions may be made to the Clyde Volunteer Fire Department or the Clyde VFW.

Please join us in honoring David by sharing your memories and uploading photos to his memorial page. Let's celebrate the life of a man who, in the words of Helen Keller, “(never) let fear stop him from doing what he wanted, or let his inner courage out and just go for it.” Chief Moyer chose to participate, to let his courage out, and he went for it with everything he had. Let's remember him that way, and let's keep his spirit alive by doing the same.
